Church and community
We are close to St Nicholas Church in every way. We are ‘next door’ and we share a boundary. We also share the green space nearby, The Sunday School Wood.
We are encouraged to make use of the church building as frequently as possible for RE and history investigations, for worship and for celebration assemblies to which we invite parents.
St Nicholas, Combe is part of the benefice of St Mary’s, Chard. Revd. Ann Kember is the Rector and Revd Georgina Vye is Associate Vicar.
Revd. Georgina is a regular visitor to our school. She frequently leads collective worship and works with us to lead community worship at Christmas and Easter.
Revd Georgina is also the school Chaplain and she supports the work of the Governing body.
The close links with the church have enabled us to take a major role in many community events such as a Christmas Nativity walk, when the church had to be closed and Easter ‘stations’ in the Sunday School Wood.
Members of the congregation regularly lead Open The Book worships, which involve the children in active tellings of Bible stories.
What we do
Within the church community
We are proud to be a key part of the village community. As such, we have worked with many local groups.
A volunteer group help to manage this open space which has a woodland, a stream and a play area. Our school took part in the official opening and we make regular visits.
The Parish Council have supported us in many activities. Recently, children from our school addressed the Council to request financial support for a running track on our school field.
The Village Shop
Elsbeth, Brian and Elsbeth have hosted visits from our nursery children and explained how the post office works. They have also made generous donations, sometimes financial and sometimes in ice lollies!
The Village Hall
We are able to use this space for sport and drama activities.
Members of the church have often led Open The Book services for the children and have included us in parish events.
We meet regularly with staff from Holyrood, our feeder secondary school. Children from our school are encouraged to take part in a variety of events both sports and linked to the Arts.
There are many sports groups including Combe Avishayes Football Club, Chard Cricket and Chard Rugby club. We work with these groups to provide sports activities for the children.
We take part in annual public speaking competitions which are organised locally by The Rotary Club. These events provide valuable opportunities for children to practise public speaking skills.
